Join Us! Get Involved! Volunteer with My Own Book!
Our Volunteers make the difference at My Own Book.
Volunteers make it possible for us to put every precious penny we receive towards getting books into the hands of as many New York City third grade students as possible.
With the exception of one part-time administrator and professional accounts, everything else is done by our volunteers.
My Own Book volunteers visit classrooms to introduce My Own Book to students in high needs schools across New York City; our volunteers accompany students with their classroom teachers to a bookstore where students purchase $60 worth of their very own books. MOBF volunteers lend a hand as the students browse the shelves, explore the books and MOBF volunteers sit with students as they begin to read their books, share their titles and their excitement. Finally, MOBF volunteers participate in follow up visits to classrooms to discuss with students the books they have chosen, what they love about their new books and to witness students’ enthusiasm and excitement, to hear them share about the books that they have read, are reading now and the books they have bought that they look forward to reading next.
Volunteers make it possible for MOBF to strengthen and deepen the reading culture in a growing number of schools in under-resourced communities across the five boroughs of New York City.
